Unlike Jim Morrison's controversial and highly-attended grave in Paris, Hendrix's grave site is simple and indistinctive. It's a basic blue marble stone tucked away in a well-manicured, contemporary, suburban cemetery. Not at all what I would have imagined for an incredible guitarist who was known for eccentric, colorful clothing and outrageous stage performances. Not much of a monument for a musician considered to be the greatest guitarist of his generation. The day I visited his grave there were only two other fans, which was a far cry from the sixty-plus fans I would see at Morrison's grave just a few months later.

Plans for a more elaborate, grander monument for Jimi Hendrix's grave were announced on Friday, September 24, 1999. The monument will feature a granite dome supported by nine pillars. Beneath the dome, surrounded by benches, will be a life-size bronze statue of Hendrix as he appeared at the Woodstock music festival the year before he died in London of an overdose of sleeping pills. The tenative dedication date is September 18, 2000, the 30th anniversary of his death. (Thanks to gravedigger Monique Blanchette for this item! Note from Grinny: this new monument sounds somewhat similar to Al Jolson's!). |
